One last thing to keep in mind. Sometimes you may encounter a bird that requires you to leave a comment. By requiring this, eBird is trying to make sure that is the actual species you observed. If this happens and you are confident that you have the ID right, simply enter what features of the bird you are seeing that led you to that ID.

For example, If I believe I have a Barrow’s Goldeneye in a flock of Common’s, I would say:

“Goldeneye with a crescent-shaped white facial marking, steeper forhead than nearby Common’s and extensive black on back with enclosed white markings.”

Just be honest on what fied marks you are seeing on this particular bird. It is also helpful for others viewing the checklist and wanting to see the bird to add comments on where exactly you saw the bird. For example, 1/2 mile down a trail.
