Fieldwork

So now you know all about binoculars, how to choose a pair and how to use them. So here is your first fieldwork assignment! Just like biologists, let’s complete some fieldwork so we are ready for the next lesson, complete each task before moving on!

Fieldwork:

  • Purchase or borrow a pair of binoculars.
  • Adjust the diopter to fit your own eyes.
  • If you wear glasses, make sure the eye-cups are down, and up if you don’t wear glasses.
  • Go outside and pick a distant stationary object. While looking at your chosen point/object, bring your binoculars up without losing sight of the point, aim for it to be close to the center point of view. Practise this step several times until you feel comfortable with getting your target in the view of your binoculars right away.
  • Once you get a hang of a stationary object, find a bird feeder and practise getting a bird in your binoculars right away.

Once you have completed these steps, you are ready to move onto the next lesson in this course, spotting scopes!
