The Birding Academy’s goal is not just to help you ID birds, but to develop a deep understanding of birds. Truly knowing the birds, their appearance, behaviors, habitats and sounds. The top birders who can identify a bird from the briefest looks have developed a great understanding of why birds are the way that they are, being familiar with the bird as a whole, as well as the parts that make them up.
With this in mind, this roadmap doesn’t just jump straight away to individual or specific family group ID. There is so much you should know before we get to that point, knowing their anatomy so you know what each of the field marks are referring to or even knowing the process of deciding on what family the bird belongs in the first place for example.
Birding is a skill where you want to start with a solid knowledge base to build your foundation on, with each new skill helping you build your house of birdy knowledge. Without these base skills and knowledge, your house will not be nearly as strong. Together we will create a rock-solid foundation on which to start your birding journey and guide you on your journey in becoming a Master Birder.

Our Mission at The Birding Academy
My goal for the Birding Academy is for it to be a resource with guided learning to help create an easy-to-follow progression for those at any skill level to develop a greater awareness for the birds around them. It doesn’t matter if you are just noticing birds and don’t even own a pair of binoculars yet or are a birder who’s been birding for many years. This academy will have lessons for all levels of birders, from beginner tutorials on birding tools, keys to id, how to find places to look for birds, all the way up to lessons on understanding bird migration, molt, and nocturnal flight calls.
These lessons are organized in a way to create an easy-to-follow path to expand your knowledge, a path you can explore at your own pace. And new courses and resources will regularly be added.
These lessons will not only help you become a better birder with your ID skills but also teach you how they live through lessons on their biology and ecology.
